Skye Lee Burns

Bio

Ever since I was a little girl, I have wanted to become a veterinarian. I was raised around all kinds of animals and I have grown to love them all. Before I went to college I showed goats in FFA, I participated in the local rodeo, and I ran cross country and track.

I started helping my mom, when I was about 10, at the vet clinic she worked at, by feeding the chickens, making bottles for the baby calves, and cleaning the cages. When I started my senior year of high school I volunteered every week at a different vet clinic than above and did all the chores of the kennel tech. Then when I graduated high school I went to work at the Caldwell Zoo in Tyler and have been there ever since. I am also working in the Student Engagement Office for the Office of Leadership and Service and I work in the on-campus food pantry for this job and plan events to promote the food pantry.

Education

I will be graduating in December of 2020 with a Bachelor's in Science Biology. My plans are to apply to the Master's program at LSU and obtain my Master's in Animal Science.

I am also enrolled in the Vet Tech Program at Cedar Valley College in Lancaster, TX. It's an online degree.

Employment

This is my 3rd year working for the Caldwell Zoo and it has led me to love all animals besides just the domesticated ones. I have always wanted to be a dog/cat veterinarian but since working here I am on the fence about also becoming an exotic vet.

I also work in the Student Engagement Office for the Office of Leadership & Service and with this job I work in the food pantry and also help with events such as the "The Big Event East Texas" which is a service event, like Texas A&Ms but here in Tyler, where we do any type of service the community wants us to do.
